Types examined

HOLOTYPE female Cynips (bulboides) bulla “Queretaro 28N Qro 7300’, Mex. Gall 1.17.32, 1 fm. 1932”, “Q. chihuahuens, Kinsey coll.”, red “Cynips bulla, Holo- Paratype”. Cynips (bulboides) bulla: one PARATYPE female “San Felipe 20SN, Gto 8000’, Mex. galls 12.7.30. 2 females 2.10.32.”, “Q. macrophylla Kinsey coll.”, “Cynips bulla Kinsey det. 34”; 1 female “Leon 20NE, Gto 9000’, Mex. galls 12.8.31, female, spring ‘32”, deposited in the general collection in AMNH, NYC, examined by GM.

Gall (Fig. 136)

A bulboid gall as described for other species of the complex. Mature galls peculiarly dark rosy or dark yellow brown, not noticeably puberulent except on younger galls, unspotted or only obscurely spotted, up to 25 mm, in average 18 mm in diameter.

Biology

The asexual generation is only known to induce leaf galls on Q. chihuahuensis, Q. magnoliifolia (= Q. macrophyla), Q. rugosa (= Q. reticulata) and Q. undata.

Mexico: Guanajuato, San Luis Potosí, Querétaro

agamic form

GALL.-A bulboid gall, as described for the complex. Mature galls peculiarly dark rosy or dark yellow brown, not noticeably puberulent ex cept on younger galls; unspotted or only obscurely spotted; up to 25. mm., averaging nearer 18. mm. in diameter. Figure 79.

HOSTS.—Quercus chihuahuensis, Q. jaralensis, Q. undata, Q. reticulata, Q. macrophylla. Possibly on all the white oaks except the alpine dwarf, Q. microphylla, in the area.

RANGE.-San Luis Potosí: San Luis Potosí, 15 W, 8000' (Q. undata). Guanajuato: San Felipe, 8 NE, 7000' (Q. macrophylla). San Felipe, 20 SW, 8000' (Q. chihuahuensis, Q. macrophylla, Q. jaralensis). León, 20 NE, 9000' (Q. reticulata, Q. jaralensis). Querétaro: Querétaro, 28 N, 7300' (types); Q. chihuahuensis; also galls, (Q. faralensis). Probably restricted to an area in Central Mexico extending from San Luis Potosí through Guanajuato and Querétaro. Figure 75.

LIFE HISTORY..—Adults: December 9, 10, 11, 16, 18. February 10, 15. Most of the emergence early in February

Our material is scant, but it represents five localities and five hosts, ranging over a Central Mexican area 100 miles in diameter. From the adjacent state of Aguascalientes we have material obviously representing a different species of the complex, but our collections are not adequate for description.
