In addition to bladder galls, Hodgkiss (1913) described four species of eriophyids that are associated with erineum on leaves of red maple in New York. They are Eriophyes major Hodgkiss, E. minutissimus (Hodgkiss), E ornatus Hodgkiss [now a synonym of E major], and E quinquilobus (Hodgkiss).

Relationship: Pale-greenish or greenish-yellow lower surface, leaf erineum often with a reddish tint, later becoming red, then brown and dry.

Amrine Catalog

Hodgkiss described three mite species from erineum on the lower surface of Acer rubrum leaves, of which Aceria major and Aceria quinquilobus remain valid species (Eriophyes ornatus is a junior synonym of A major). These are either distinct species forming similar galls, in which case it is not clear how the galls might be distinguished, or an inducer-inquiline pair, in which case it is not clear which is the inducer. All current observations have been placed in Aceria major.
