Sages in western North America evidently support many kinds of galls formed by Rhopalomyia spp., and several kinds are represented in the USNM. Galls are monothalamous even though they may form close aggregates... Two species of gall midges have been described from Salvia.

R. audibertiae Felt. Galls are conical, narrowing from base, and the same color as the leaf... Host: S. apiana. Distr.: Baja California and Mexico.

R. salviae Felt. Galls are cylindrical and reddish... Host: S. "californica" [S. apiana] Distr.: California
